Russian financial firms learn to push back against cyberattacks

The number of serious cyber incidents in Russia’s financial sector fell sharply in 2025, reflecting stronger defences despite increasingly complex attack methods.

Cyberattacks on Russian financial institutions declined by 12% over the past year, according to analysts cited by Kommersant. The total number of successful incidents stood at just over 1,000, the lowest level recorded in the past four years.

Analysts note a clear trend towards more sophisticated attack scenarios, a pattern expected to intensify. Even so, Russia’s information security sector continues to adapt, developing new protective measures to keep pace with evolving threats.

AI-driven response

Only 7% of attacks on banks and other financial organisations resulted in breaches. In 93% of cases, attackers failed to gain access to data. Social engineering techniques and malicious software were the most commonly used methods.

In some cases, attackers combined several techniques at once, increasing the time and resources required to carry out an intrusion. The growing use of artificial intelligence in cyberattacks is prompting Russian information security companies to develop new defensive tools. Today, they offer a broad range of antivirus and security solutions, serving both small businesses and large state-owned corporations.
