Russian Neural Network Keeps Supermarkets in Check

A security system powered by Russian AI is already stopping shoplifters in thousands of stores across the country—and saving retailers millions of dollars.

The company BIT, using artificial intelligence developed by NtechLab, has rolled out a system designed to prevent shoplifting in Russian supermarkets.

The technology is already deployed in more than 10,000 stores nationwide, from Vladivostok to Kaliningrad. In the first eight months of 2025 alone, it helped prevent thefts worth over 2.2 billion rubles (about $26 million). The algorithms process live video feeds, detect suspicious behavior, and instantly alert staff.

According to BIT, most thefts are committed by men around 34 years old with low incomes. The most frequently stolen items include alcohol, cheese, electronics, cosmetics, and clothing for resale. By enabling rapid response, the system has also proven effective against organized shoplifting groups, which pose the greatest threat to retailers.
