During World Nuclear Week, Russia’s state corporation Rosatom hosted a session highlighting the role of research reactors in nuclear medicine, industrial applications, and workforce training. Experts from Algeria, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan joined the discussion.

Partner countries shared progress made with Russian support. Vietnam plans to build a radiopharmaceutical production center by 2033. Indonesia aims to expand PET-scan–based cancer diagnostics and treatment across its archipelago by 2027. Uzbek specialists discussed using nuclear medicine to produce drugs for treating thyroid cancer.

Speakers also focused on Russia’s unique facilities, including the IBR-2 pulsed reactor, considered one of the world’s top sources of thermal neutrons. Located at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, IBR-2 is used by scientists from more than 20 countries. Looking ahead, Rosatom’s flagship international project is the multipurpose fast-neutron research reactor (MBIR), now under construction in the Ulyanovsk region.
