Russian Pharma Plant Uses AI to Inspect 300 Million Capsules Monthly

A pharmaceutical manufacturer in Russia is deploying a neural network to check every single capsule it produces—up to 300 million per month.

A pharmaceutical capsule plant in Russia is rolling out artificial intelligence to automate its quality control. The facility, operated by SamArs in the Samara region, aims to boost production to 300 million capsules per month—including both medications and dietary supplements. To maintain quality at such scale, the company is relying on machine vision systems powered by AI.

Currently, the plant is in the commissioning phase of its new production line, while simultaneously training the neural network. Each cycle improves the accuracy of defect detection, as the system continually learns to identify substandard capsules.

The company also plans to expand its market, supplying pharmaceuticals to neighboring countries. With the help of Russian-made digital tools, SamArs expects its capsule line to earn GMP certification—an internationally recognized pharmaceutical quality standard.
