Russian Platforms Use AI to Turn Books into Audiobooks

AI-generated narration and smart syncing features are driving a surge in audiobook and e-book consumption across Russia’s digital reading platforms.
Russian digital platforms are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to voice books. One example is Yandex Books, which now offers more than 120,000 titles with AI-generated audio narration.
The neural network does more than just read — it helps retain users by recalling plot details from earlier chapters. This AI-powered feature keeps readers engaged by offering quick summaries of the last few sections they read.
Another innovation is seamless format switching. Users can start by listening and then switch to reading without having to manually find their place.
Currently, 5.2 million Russians are subscribed to domestic reading platforms. Each user engages with either audiobooks or digital texts, a trend that highlights the growing popularity of literature and the successful adoption of digital tools in the book industry.
A separate Russian service recently reported a 34% year-over-year increase in online subscriptions for digital content, including books. Most of this growth comes from teens and college students, especially during summer break.
