Russian Regions Roll Out Smart Traffic Systems to Boost Safety and Cut Congestion

Regional authorities in Penza, Zarechny, and Zasechny are installing adaptive traffic lights, real‑time sensors, and a centralized traffic management hub—aiming to speed up travel, halve violations, and make roads safer.

Russian regions are rolling out an intelligent transportation system (ITS) designed to make roads safer and cut congestion. Over the next few years, Penza, Zarechny, and Zasechny will see large‑scale deployments of adaptive traffic signals, traffic‑monitoring sensors, and a unified traffic management center, according to PenzaInform.

Beginning in 2025, the region will replace imported controllers in its traffic lights with equipment produced locally in Penza. The ITS will accelerate vehicle flow through adaptive signal timing, reduce traffic violations—coordinated management cuts violations by 1.5 to 2 times, while adaptive control cuts them by six times—and enhance overall road safety.

This initiative forms part of Russia’s broader strategy to digitize its transportation infrastructure. Regional authorities believe the new system will make traffic more convenient and predictable for all road users.

By enabling real‑time traffic monitoring, the intelligent transportation system will relieve bottlenecks, decrease the number of infractions, and improve the general quality of urban travel. Such projects also drive domestic manufacturing and further the digital transformation of infrastructure, ensuring comfort and safety for everyone on the road.
