Researchers from Skoltech, the North-Eastern Federal University, and Sber's Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence have developed an intelligent algorithm designed to prevent failures in electric power networks. The system continuously analyzes incoming data to detect anomalies. When it identifies a potential threat, it immediately activates protective mechanisms.

The researchers say the technology is particularly well suited for wind and solar power plants, as well as data centers and industrial facilities with large concentrations of electronic equipment.

“Conventional power plants generate electricity using heavy turbines with significant rotational inertia. That inertia naturally smooths out sudden changes in the grid and dampens short-term fluctuations. Renewable energy sources, by contrast, rely on high-speed power electronics that do not provide the same inherent inertial support,” said Stepan Vasilyev, a graduate researcher at Skoltech's Energy Transition Center.

The algorithm also makes decisions within fractions of a second, a capability that is critical for protecting equipment that is sensitive to sudden voltage fluctuations.
