Russian Scientists Build AI System to Track Satellites from Earth

Researchers in Russia have created an AI-powered ground-based system capable of identifying artificial objects in orbit in real time.

Russian scientists have developed a unique technology that can detect and classify types of artificial space objects directly from Earth. The announcement was made by Anatoly Kalyaev, a member of the Presidential Youth Council, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The system focuses on satellites in low Earth orbit—up to 2,000 kilometers above the planet. It integrates an optical telescope with auto-tracking capabilities, big data analytics, and specialized hardware designed for fast data processing.

According to Kalyaev, the platform enables operators to understand exactly what is moving through orbit in real time. 'No country today has this capability,' he said, noting that the breakthrough will significantly enhance space domain awareness and the safety of orbital operations.
