Researchers at Perm Polytechnic University have unveiled an intelligent energy management system for oil wells that can reduce electricity costs by 10–12 percent. The innovation is designed to make oil production in Russia more energy efficient.

The system analyzes real-time data from oil wells, forecasts required energy consumption, and uses two automatic controllers to select optimal pump parameters. This approach ensures maximum energy efficiency under a wide range of operating conditions.

An Intelligent Assistant for Operators

The technology combines mathematical modeling with artificial intelligence. A neural network adapts the control algorithms to the specific characteristics of each well, effectively acting as an intelligent assistant for operators. Testing showed that energy consumption dropped by 5.5 kilowatts during intensive operating modes, translating into savings of up to 1.7 kilowatts per well.

Deploying the system at oil fields with hundreds of wells could save tens of millions of rubles annually (roughly several hundred thousand to over one million US dollars per year). Current research is focused on scaling the system and preparing it for full industrial deployment.
