Russian Scientists Turn Electric Vehicle Braking Into a New Energy Source

Researchers at Siberian Federal University have built digital algorithms that turn braking losses in electric transport into energy gains, feeding up to 30 percent back into the grid.

Russia is pushing to make electric transport more efficient. Digital algorithms are now enabling smart management of energy flows. Braking is no longer just energy lost—it becomes a fresh source of power.

To achieve this, scientists deployed advanced software, including an embedded “on-chip” solution. According to the developers at Siberian Federal University, their algorithm efficiently manages energy flows during braking. As a result, up to 30 percent of the electricity that was previously wasted can be returned to the grid.

The breakthrough stands out not only for its high energy recovery but also for its adaptability. It does not require costly reconstruction of transport networks or large-scale infrastructure upgrades. The embedded on-chip solution makes it possible to install control modules on electric buses, trams, or trolleybuses without additional expenses. This means the technology is already ready for mass deployment.
