Russian Scientists Unveil GenomeAI, a Platform That Simplifies Genetic Research

The new system makes complex DNA analysis accessible even for small laboratories, lowering costs and removing technical barriers for medical research.

Researchers at St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics, and Optics (ITMO) have introduced GenomeAI, a cloud-based platform designed to radically simplify genetic testing. The system offers a full cycle of DNA analysis through a single interface, requiring no advanced technical skills to operate.

University representatives told IT-Russia that GenomeAI addresses one of the biggest hurdles in modern medicine: the complexity and high costs of genetic testing. Until now, specialists had to manually configure digital infrastructure, juggle multiple fragmented programs, and risk losing data. GenomeAI automates the entire process—from data upload to interpretation of results—including sequencing and mutation detection, such as those linked to cancer.

For Russian healthcare and science, the breakthrough is significant. The platform opens new possibilities for diagnosing hereditary diseases, forecasting their progression, family planning, prenatal screening, and tailoring personalized therapies for patients.

Crucially, the technology isn’t just for large research hubs. GenomeAI is designed to make advanced genetic tools available to smaller laboratories across the country. So far, the project is funded by its own developers, who are actively seeking partners.

“We want to maintain a balance between current demand for computing power, security, and the final cost for users,” said project lead Andrey Zhirov, a graduate student at the university.
