Russian Students Develop the ‘Fuel Station of the Future’ for Agricultural Drones

A team of students from Russia’s Financial University has created an automated ground refueling station for agricultural drones, signaling a new era of autonomy in precision farming.

Students at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, working within the federal project ‘Personnel for Unmanned Aerial Systems’ (supported by University 2035), have designed an automated ground refueling station for agricultural drones. In September, the team conducted laboratory tests at the university’s Barnaul branch, marking a milestone in Russia’s drone-powered agriculture.

From Drones to a Full Ecosystem

Agriculture in the 21st century is rapidly transforming into a high-tech industry—tractors are being replaced by drones, shovels by algorithms, and manual labor by digital systems. Against this backdrop, the breakthrough by Russian students stands out. The Vikhry (Whirlwind) team has developed the country’s first automated ground refueling station for agrodrones—a full-fledged piece of infrastructure that could reshape the entire approach to crop management.

The station can refuel up to three drones simultaneously in less than five minutes without human intervention. Once a drone lands, it connects automatically to a hose, the liquid solution (such as fertilizer or pesticide) is dispensed, and sensors stop the flow at the precise level. The system also monitors battery charge, ensuring the drone can complete its mission and return safely. The result is a self-sustaining ecosystem of autonomous operation—where humans act only as observers.

A Strategic Step for Russia’s Agro-Tech Sector

For Russia’s agricultural sector, this represents a major step forward. Automating drone maintenance reduces downtime, increases field processing speed, and enhances overall efficiency—critical factors amid rising food demand and import substitution goals. The project, launched as part of a federal initiative, also highlights the country’s efforts to train a new generation of engineers for the digital agriculture era.
