Russian Surgeons Share Experience Using Robots in Operations

Robotic systems and AI are becoming integral to Russian medicine—but as tools that enhance a surgeon’s precision, not replace them.

Leading specialists across Russia have shared their experience with surgical assistant robots. According to Oleg Bronov, scientific director of Cels, a developer of AI platforms, robot-assisted surgery represents a gradual increase in autonomy within specific, well-defined tasks.

“A robot can hold a camera without trembling, guide an instrument along the optimal trajectory, or alert the surgeon to a danger zone,” Bronov explained.

The practical benefits of such surgeries are confirmed by Andrey Nefyodov, head of thoracic oncology at Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Phthisiopulmonology (SPb NIIF). He notes that robot-assisted procedures minimize blood loss, significantly reducing patients’ recovery time.

AI Adoption Expands Across Russian Healthcare

Beyond surgery, artificial intelligence is making rapid inroads in other medical fields. It has become especially valuable in radiology, where AI helps analyze medical images and detect pathologies such as pneumonia or malignant tumors with high accuracy.

Russia’s healthcare AI market, currently valued at 12 billion rubles (about $144 million), is projected to reach 78 billion rubles (roughly $930 million) by 2030.
