Russian Vessels to Be Controlled From Space

Unique satellites launched into orbit are set to form the backbone of Russia’s digital transport management infrastructure.

Several unique Russian satellites have been launched into orbit. According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, the spacecraft include Zorkiy-2 Earth observation satellites equipped with multispectral cameras and receivers for signals from the Automatic Identification System used by vessels.

Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin said the satellites are designed to carry out critically important remote sensing tasks. This is particularly relevant for the Northern Sea Route, which requires constant monitoring of ice conditions. He added that the technology will become an integral part of the country’s digital transport management infrastructure. Space-based monitoring makes it possible to track transport movements online and issue early warnings about potential risks.

A Satellite on Lease

“This will open the way to selecting optimal routes, reducing fuel costs, and minimizing negative environmental impacts,” the ministry said.

In the longer term, a unified transport system with optimized logistics is expected to take shape. Notably, the satellite was launched using a leasing mechanism for the first time. This approach is intended to boost domestic satellite production and enable the deployment of larger satellite constellations for operations in space.
