Russians Turn to Public Wi-Fi as Mobile Data Access Shrinks

This summer, Wi-Fi usage in Russia surged almost fourfold as restrictions on mobile internet pushed people toward public networks.

According to Rostelecom’s southern branch, the number of Wi-Fi connections in public hotspots grew 3.6 times during the summer of 2025. The total number of unique user devices doubled, while overall mobile data traffic jumped by 4.4 times.

The surge is linked to temporary restrictions on mobile internet in certain regions, introduced as a security measure.

To make access easier, interactive maps of public Wi-Fi points have started appearing in different regions. These maps, integrated into Yandex.Maps, allow residents and visitors to quickly locate free access points. The service promises to keep the data regularly updated.

Earlier, authorities also announced plans to provide free internet access in Russian schools, colleges, universities, medical clinics, and other public institutions.
