Russia’s First AI Service for Libraries Enters Testing Phase

The Arctic State Institute of Culture and Arts has unveiled an AI-powered system that could revolutionize cataloging, search, and document processing in Russian libraries.

The Arctic State Institute of Culture and Arts has introduced the country’s first artificial intelligence service designed to modernize library operations. The platform aims to completely overhaul cataloging, search, and document processing workflows.

The project features three core modules: automated cataloging, a virtual assistant, and text processing tools. According to Timur Alekseev, head of the institute’s AI Center, pilot testing is already underway in partnership with the Scientific Library of the Buryat State Agricultural Academy.

The service supports automated creation of bibliographic records in the RUSMARC format, greatly accelerating catalog management. The initiative is part of the 'Cultural Code of the Arctic' project, which seeks to preserve the heritage of northern peoples through advanced technology. If implemented widely, this AI solution could mark a significant step in digitizing Russian libraries, offering faster access to knowledge and easier interaction with archival collections.
