Russia’s GigaChat AI Passes Medical School Exams, Specializes in Rheumatology

The Russian neural network GigaChat has demonstrated advanced medical knowledge by acing entrance exams for a rheumatology program—marking its sixth healthcare specialty.

In an unconventional experiment, Sberbank’s GigaChat AI was tasked with taking the entrance exam for Samara State Medical University. The results were striking: the neural network would not only be admitted but would likely become a straight-A student.

Rheumatology is now the sixth medical discipline GigaChat has mastered, following cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, pediatrics, and general medicine. The AI continues to undergo targeted training to better assist doctors with complex clinical challenges.

Developers emphasize that the AI is not meant to replace physicians. Instead, it is designed to ease the workload of medical professionals—particularly by handling repetitive tasks that consume valuable time.

This neural network also offers new opportunities for providing care in remote areas, where access to specialists is limited. With its diagnostic and decision-support capabilities, GigaChat could help elevate the quality of healthcare across the country.
