Russia’s Nuclear Sector Taps Quantum Computing to Boost Efficiency

Rosatom is integrating quantum technologies into nuclear energy operations, combining fundamental research with real-world industrial applications.

Since 2020, Rosatom has been leading a national initiative called 'Quantum Computing,' which has garnered strong praise from the Russian Academy of Sciences. This effort reflects both a scientific breakthrough and a shift toward practical deployment of quantum technologies in Russia’s nuclear industry.

Quantum algorithms are now the foundation of software solutions aimed at optimizing production and task planning. These tools are being used to simulate heat transfer processes, manage thermal exchange, and develop digital twins of nuclear power plants and other complex facilities. In total, 17 quantum-powered projects have been developed within the nuclear sector, with four already showing promising, repeatable results.

Rosatom also emphasized the importance of workforce training. More than 150 professionals have completed advanced training in quantum computing through its corporate academy.
