«Smart Bone»: Russian Scientists Create Algorithm for Perfectly Personalized Implants

A new digital modeling system replicates the intricate structure of real bone, promising stronger and more natural integration.

Researchers at Perm Polytechnic University have developed a unique algorithm that allows doctors to create personalized bone implants precisely imitating the porous structure of a patient’s natural bone. The technology addresses one of modern medicine’s biggest challenges — combining the mechanical strength of artificial implants with full biocompatibility for successful integration.

The system acts as a digital constructor, allowing doctors to create implants tailored to each patient’s anatomy. Unlike traditional implants, which often compromise between durability and integration, the new algorithm produces structures that both withstand heavy loads and support natural bone regeneration.

Built for Regeneration

The algorithm processes CT scan data from each patient, analyzing bone thickness and porosity, then automatically generates a 3D model with optimized internal geometry.

“Our approach makes it possible to fine-tune key implant parameters — pore size, internal wall thickness, and overall density,” said Mikhail Tashkinov, head of the same laboratory. “This creates the ideal conditions for vascular and bone cell growth, as well as the correct distribution of mechanical stress.”

The system has already undergone virtual testing, confirming that the generated implants can withstand physiological loads while supporting tissue regeneration. Researchers say the method could be applied in orthopedic reconstruction, oncology-related bone repair, and dental surgery.

By relying on affordable materials and standard 3D-printing methods, the team believes their innovation will make personalized bone regeneration technology accessible to hospitals worldwide — and significantly improve recovery outcomes for patients with complex injuries.
