Engineers in Russia’s Yugra region have developed and patented a smart door lock that can be controlled remotely through a smartphone, even if the owner is thousands of miles away. The device replaces the standard cylinder inside a door lock, according to the regional Department of Industry.

The lock connects to a constant power supply, eliminating concerns that a battery might run out at the wrong moment. Inside the mechanism is a high-torque planetary gear motor capable of turning even very stiff locking mechanisms.

Owners Receive Alerts When the Door Opens

The internal core of the lock can be adapted to different types of doors—from thin apartment doors to heavy security ones. On the outside, the mechanism is covered by a decorative plate. If the smart core fails, the door can still be opened with a traditional key.

The device also connects to wired internet, allowing the owner to monitor in real time when someone opens the entrance door.

Earlier reports noted that researchers in Novosibirsk have developed an autonomous smart home system designed as a prototype for future housing.
