Urals Restorers Reconstruct Ancient Vessels From World's Only Eneolithic Necropolis in Arctic Circle
Fragments of ceramic vessels found at the ancient Salekhard-5 necropolis have been sent to specialists in the Urals for restoration.
Restorers will reconstruct the complete forms of the Copper Age artifacts so that accurate digital copies can later be created.
In August, the unique fragments were delivered to the restoration workshops of the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts and the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local History. Specialists have already assessed the condition of the artifacts and determined the scope of the work. The main task at this stage is to fully reconstruct the vessels' shapes and ornamentation.
After the fragments are reassembled and restored, digital copies of the vessels are expected to be used in VR experiences and virtual exhibitions. The project will therefore serve two purposes: adding physical artifacts to museum collections and creating digital objects for immersive virtual reality experiences.
The Salekhard-5 burial ground was discovered during the renovation of the Obdorsky Ostrog historical and architectural complex. It is currently the world's only known Eneolithic necropolis within the Arctic Circle and covers an area of about 1.5 hectares.
