VIZ-Steel has completed a key stage in deploying an intelligent system to prevent workplace risks. The main focus was the cold-rolling shop, where 189 digital light barriers were installed across 27 pieces of process equipment. The barriers monitor personnel access to hazardous areas without physical contact. If an employee approaches operating equipment, the system immediately stops it.

The project initially called for just 164 sensors, but the number was increased to cover as many risk zones as possible. The system has been integrated into the plant’s existing production infrastructure, including equipment with both analog and digital controls. Controllers, sensors and programmable shutdown logic are used to operate the system.

Total investment in the project amounted to about 30 million rubles ($~375,000). The project has been underway since late last year.

“Light barriers help create a safer, more controlled and predictable production environment while maintaining stable processes and product quality. The project will continue to evolve. We are still fine-tuning the system, expanding its capabilities and strengthening protection where it matters most,” said Eduard Prokofiev, head of occupational health and industrial safety at VIZ-Steel.
