Yandex Opens Medical AI Assistant to Doctors

Doctors in Russia have gained a new digital tool that helps them find the information they need faster, right in the course of their work. The system runs on personal devices and draws on more than 1,000 vetted sources, providing verifiable references.

Russia’s largest IT company has opened the beta version of its medical AI assistant to all doctors in Russia, rather than limiting access to clinicians at Yandex partner clinics. The service helps doctors search clinical guidelines and regulatory documents, check prescriptions and calculate medical scores. For physicians, above all, it offers a faster way to find the information they need, freeing up valuable time for patient care.

Until recently, tools like these in healthcare were largely confined to individual clinics and major digital projects. Now the medical AI assistant is becoming directly accessible to healthcare professionals. They can use it through the web version or the Yandex Med app, including on personal devices – smartphones, tablets, laptops or desktop computers.

More Than a Chatbot

What primarily sets the medical assistant apart from an ordinary chatbot is the source material it relies on. Before generating an answer, the system consults more than 1,000 vetted medical sources. These include current clinical guidelines, the International Classification of Diseases and the state register of medicines. Within seconds, the AI searches through Ministry of Health orders, regulatory documents and reference materials.

Doctors receive more than a ready-made answer. The service provides references to the documents it used, allowing clinicians to open the original source and verify the information themselves. That approach is particularly important in medicine, where the consequences of an error can be far greater than in a conventional search. At the same time, physicians do not delegate decision-making or diagnosis to the neural network. They use it only to double-check their own conclusions.

For example, a primary care physician can ask about interactions among several prescribed medications. A neurologist can check which examinations are recommended after a first epileptic seizure. A pulmonologist can calculate the severity of community-acquired pneumonia using the CURB-65 score and then compare the result with treatment recommendations.

More than 20 medical calculators and scoring tools are already built into the system. That means doctors do not have to search separately for the appropriate tool, enter patient data into it and then return to the medical documentation.

How the AI Finds Answers

Behind the seemingly simple conversation is a fairly complex system. The technology is built on Yandex AI Studio tools specifically adapted for medical applications. The software can be accessed through the web version or the Yandex Med app for Android. An iOS version will be released later.

First, a dedicated classifier determines whether a request is medical. This limits the range of tasks the assistant handles. A router then selects the appropriate type of source, such as regulatory documents, clinical guidelines or drug information. The retrieved materials subsequently undergo additional filtering. A reranker analyzes the documents and determines which passages most precisely address the specific request. Only after these multiple stages does the system generate its final answer.

Convenient and Reliable

Healthcare professionals have many tasks to handle. They need to consult guidelines, clarify contraindications, check drug characteristics, calculate a score or find the latest regulatory document. Yet the human brain is not a computer, and even an experienced clinician can find it difficult to keep such a vast body of information in mind.

The AI assistant can take over this work. Doctors are not limited to using the assistant on an office computer. Because the service is available across devices, they can ask a question even while making rounds.

That does not diminish the physician’s expertise. On the contrary, the faster clinicians can obtain the underlying information, the more time they have to assess an individual patient’s condition, compare symptoms with test results, talk with the patient and choose a course of treatment.

From Individual Clinics to Digital Medicine

For medical AI in Russia, the current launch is also significant because of its scale. Yandex’s assistant was previously used as part of integrated systems for the company’s partner clinics. The tool is now moving beyond individual healthcare organizations, making the service available to all healthcare professionals.

More broadly, Russian developers are building their own digital healthcare ecosystem. Opening Yandex’s medical assistant to all doctors marks an important step toward putting these technologies into practical use.

Doctors spend between one-third and one-half of an appointment completing clinical documentation. In addition, clinical guidelines are constantly being updated, while new scientific publications appear almost every day, making it difficult for healthcare professionals to keep track of all the changes. The AI assistant will take over much of the routine work so that doctors can focus on their work and devote more attention to patients
