Russian Researchers Patent Water-Saving Digital Printing Technology for Cotton

Researchers at Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design have patented a formulation for digital printing on cotton that eliminates the need for prolonged fabric washing after a design is printed.

Fabric manufacturing and dyeing involve complex processes. In digital textile printing, an inkjet printer applies a design directly to the material, much like a standard printer puts an image on paper. But textiles present an extra challenge: the dye must do more than reach the surface. It needs to bond securely to the fibers so the fabric does not bleed color and the design does not wash out or wear away through friction. Traditionally, manufacturers steam the material to set the dye, then rinse it several times in hot and cold water.

Researchers at Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design have proposed a different approach. They developed a pretreatment formulation for cotton that fixes the dye without additional processing steps.

How Do You Make a Print Last?

The solution developed by researchers at the Professor A. A. Kharkharov Department of Chemical Technologies at SPbSUITD relies on a specially formulated water-based mixture. It contains polyvinyl acetate and polyethylene emulsions, with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as its key ingredient. This compound helps the dye bond more firmly to the fabric.

The process starts by impregnating the cotton with the formulation, then wringing it out and drying it. An inkjet printer applies the design using reactive dyes. Finally, the fabric is heated to 140–160°C (284–320°F) for just three to five minutes. That is enough to set the color. Prolonged steaming and multistage rinsing are no longer necessary.

The result is a shorter production process, with some operations that consume substantial amounts of water and energy eliminated altogether.

Without Sacrificing Quality

But what effect does this new dye-setting process have on print quality and durability? Laboratory tests showed that color intensity and resistance to washing and rubbing remained high. According to the researchers, the results meet quality standards for premium textiles, and the prints are just as vivid as those produced using conventional methods.

That matters to manufacturers because saving resources should not entail spending more on defect inspections or compromising product quality. If the fabric retains its performance characteristics under the new treatment process, manufacturers can rethink their production workflows without relaxing their usual standards for finished textiles.

The method could also deliver environmental benefits. It can save thousands of liters of water per production cycle while reducing the volume of wastewater containing residual dyes and processing chemicals, easing the burden on treatment facilities. Energy consumption also falls. For manufacturers, that translates into substantial resource savings.

Beyond Russia: Global Potential

The technology has export potential because textile manufacturers around the world face the same challenge of reducing water and energy consumption. It could appeal to companies that use direct digital printing on cotton and want to cut the number of post-printing processing steps.

If industrial trials confirm the laboratory results, the new dye-setting method could form the basis of an offering to textile manufacturers abroad. The potential appeal goes beyond resource savings: shorter processing times could help streamline production and speed up order fulfillment.

Experts must now evaluate the method under real manufacturing conditions. If the results hold up, textile manufacturers will gain another tool for reducing costs, while the Russian innovation could find opportunities in the international digital fabric-printing market.

We have turned the relationship between the chemical composition of the pretreatment formulation and dye fixation into a practical tool. The method’s main advantage is that it fits into existing production lines and eliminates the most resource-intensive stages: rinsing and drying
