Runet Economy Surged 40% in 2024

Russia’s internet economy hit $287 billion last year, fueled by e-commerce and artificial intelligence despite external shocks.

The Russian Association for Electronic Communications (RAEC) presented the latest figures at the Russian Internet Forum (RIF-2025). Statistics show the Runet economy grew by 40% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 24 trillion rubles (approx. $287 billion).

E-commerce remains the undisputed leader, accounting for 91% of the total market—22 trillion rubles (approx. $263 billion). It is followed by marketing and advertising (5.1% or 1.23 trillion rubles, approx. $15 billion), infrastructure (2.2% or 0.55 trillion rubles, approx. $6.6 billion), and digital content (1% or 0.25 trillion rubles, approx. $3 billion).

Analysts note that despite contradictory trends, the market continues to demonstrate resilience. Import substitution and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence are helping to offset losses. AI has become a key growth driver, providing additional momentum for development—a trend expected to accelerate.

A landmark achievement was the increase in the share of online sales in overall retail to 20%, underscoring the deep digital transformation of Russia’s consumer market.

RAEC’s outlook for 2025 is optimistic: the Runet economy is projected to reach 29.5–30.5 trillion rubles (approx. $353–$365 billion). The infrastructure segment is expected to grow the fastest (+40%), while advertising and digital content could expand by 20% and 30% respectively.

Russia’s digital economy has not only adapted to new conditions but has entered a trajectory of stable growth. E-commerce remains the main engine of the market, while technology—especially AI—forms the foundation for its long-term development.
