Russia’s Energy Sector Among Top Three Industries Using AI

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming Russia’s fuel and energy sector, with more than half of companies already applying the technology and adoption expected to reach 70% by 2030.

Speaking at the TNF industrial energy forum in Tyumen, Felix Mitskevich, Director of the Ministry of Energy’s Digital Transformation Department, said the sector ranks among the top three in AI adoption. Currently, 58% of companies are using advanced technologies, and the share is projected to rise to 70% within the next five years.

Generative AI is playing a growing role: machine learning algorithms forecast reserves of specific deposits; neural networks optimize cargo logistics; chemists use AI to design new surfactant formulas that boost oil recovery; digital twins accelerate and cut the cost of core and fluid analysis; and AI tools increase drilling speeds by 20–30% while reducing accidents six- to eightfold.

According to Fyodor Burkov, CEO of Nedra Digital, the sector is also becoming more self-sufficient with domestic systems. In engineering software, Russian solutions now account for 83%, and local developers also play a major role in automated control systems.
