Rosatom’s Giredmet Develops Method for Producing Thallium Nitrate
The material is essential to high-tech industries.

Researchers at JSC Giredmet, part of Rosatom, have developed a method for producing high-purity thallium nitrate, a compound widely used in microelectronics and microwave electronics. Thallium nitrate is added to electrolytes used to gold-plate contacts and microchip components.
The work was carried out under a contract with Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade. According to the specialists, launching domestic production will eliminate reliance on imports. Production costs are also expected to be 40% lower than the prices offered by foreign manufacturers.
“The product samples successfully passed technological trials at an operating production facility, receiving positive assessments confirming that the material is suitable for use in electrolytes for phosphate gold plating. We have developed proprietary technologies and our own technical specifications that give us a two-orders-of-magnitude margin in purity over market requirements. This represents a fundamentally different level of technological independence: we control the entire chain of expertise,” said Dmitry Vasilyev, deputy production director at JSC Giredmet.
