Irina Volynets: 'Artificial Intelligence and Parental Involvement Can Help Protect Children's Health'

Russian schools are introducing high-tech systems to automatically monitor the quality of children’s meals. Children’s Rights Commissioner Irina Volynets praised AI as a powerful tool for safeguarding student health.

In the Yamalo-Nenets region, authorities are rolling out hardware and software systems based on artificial intelligence to monitor school meals. The new digital solution is designed to enhance oversight by automatically tracking food supplies, monitoring key cooking stages, and analyzing critical parameters of finished meals.

According to Irina Volynets, a member of the Public Chamber of Russia and Children’s Rights Commissioner in the Republic of Tatarstan, a combination of parental involvement and digital technology is key to ensuring food quality for children.

“There are areas where there can never be too much control. Everything connected with our children, including food quality, falls into that category. A child’s health, mood, and performance depend on nutrition. Even the way they feel going to school in the morning often depends on what they are given for lunch. And it is not just about how the dish looks or tastes—it is even about its temperature,” Volynets emphasized.

She stressed the importance of monitoring organoleptic properties: taste, aroma, texture, and temperature.

“Parental oversight is undoubtedly important, but it is the combination of parents, specialized services, student feedback, and AI-based technical evaluation that can truly solve this challenge,” the commissioner added.

Volynets also highlighted the importance of monitoring ingredient quality:

“Much depends on what the food is made of. Children’s health is paramount, and it directly depends on the quality of their meals.”

The introduction of AI in school meal programs marks a significant step toward more transparent and objective monitoring. The technology minimizes human error and systematizes data, ensuring oversight at every stage—from product supply to the serving of prepared meals.
