Artificial Intelligence Begins Monitoring the Cleanliness of Russian Buses

AI is becoming a key tool for building cleaner, safer, and more efficient urban environments across Russia.

In the city of Chelyabinsk, authorities have deployed artificial intelligence to monitor the cleanliness of public transportation. According to Deputy Mayor Dmitry Ageev, cameras equipped with AI have been installed on routes where dirty buses are a recurring issue. The system detects contamination and automatically sends reports to the state agency responsible for transport oversight.

This initiative is part of a broader wave of AI integration in Russia’s public transport sector. In the Moscow region, for instance, smart algorithms analyzing passenger traffic helped eliminate massive queues at bus stops by dynamically adjusting schedules.

‘Smart’ Crosswalks and Traffic Lights

Similar intelligent systems are now being rolled out nationwide. In 25 regions, ‘smart’ pedestrian crossings detect people and alert drivers in real time, preventing accidents. Meanwhile, adaptive traffic lights automatically adjust signal timing, creating ‘green waves’ that keep vehicles moving smoothly and help prevent congestion.

These developments show how AI in Russia is evolving from isolated experiments to a complex, citywide infrastructure — one that keeps streets clean, saves citizens time, and even helps save lives.
