Scientists at Kabardino-Balkarian State University (KBSU) have received a grant to develop an innovative system for managing carbon nutrition in plants. The funding was awarded by the Russian Science Foundation.

The project involves developing a new digital platform to optimize agricultural processes. The platform is designed to make the most efficient use of carbon dioxide, which plants need to grow. Particular attention will be paid to carbon nutrition in root systems. Carbon dioxide absorbed by plants contributes up to 24% of their total biomass.

The research advances a new field of study called “plant carbon nutrition engineering.” As part of this effort, researchers at KBSU’s Center for Decarbonization of Agriculture and the Regional Economy plan to develop an integrated hardware and control system that combines monitoring, quantitative modeling and management of carbon dioxide flows across the substrate–plant–atmosphere system.
