Russian telecom operator MegaFon has announced plans to deploy the country’s first corporate 5G private network. The report was first published by TASS, citing its own sources.

So far, only limited details about the project have been disclosed. According to representatives of the operator, the network will be built for “the country’s largest mining and chemical enterprise” operating in Russia’s Arctic zone. Officials said the customer’s autonomous open-pit mining vehicles in the Far North will run on the new network infrastructure. The technology could also help minimize the presence of workers in hazardous industrial areas.

Earlier, MegaFon deployed a 5G network across the grounds of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, where the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia conference, known as TsIPR, is being held. The fifth-generation network covers the entire forum venue, including outdoor exhibition zones, the Main Fair House, and business and exhibition pavilions.
