More than 300 autonomous trucks are expected to operate on Russian roads by 2028, Andrey Nikitin, head of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, told TASS in an interview.

He said that in 2026, priority in the development of autonomous vehicles will be given to freight transport. As a result, the fleet of driverless trucks is set to grow to 111 vehicles that year.

“More than 90 highly automated trucks are currently operating on public roads, and their number is planned to increase to 111 in 2026 and to 313 by 2028,” the minister said.

Efficiency Lies in Controlled and Predictable Routes

Autonomous trucks are currently hauling cargo along the M-11 Neva Highway and the Central Ring Road. In 2026, they are set to begin operating on the M-12 Vostok Highway, running from Moscow to Yekaterinburg.

According to the minister, deploying autonomous transport in closed areas with predictable routes has proven more effective. Since 2024, driverless vehicles have transported more than one million cubic meters of cargo across Russia.
