Taxi Navigator

Federal taxi aggregator XCar has integrated 2GIS technology – maps, routing and distance calculations – directly into its app.

The integration allows drivers to stop relying on third-party services. The package includes maps that visualize trips in real time, navigation APIs that build routes based on current traffic conditions, a distance matrix for selecting the nearest vehicle and a GPS map-matching algorithm that improves the accuracy of vehicle location and movement displays.

For Russia's IT industry, the significance of the technology lies in the development of geospatial technology as a core infrastructure sector. For passengers, it is expected to improve the accuracy of vehicle locations and estimated pickup times, reduce routing errors and offer a single app without the need to switch between services. On a national scale, the integration reflects the growing capabilities of Russian geospatial services, their declining dependence on foreign mapping technologies and the emergence of technology platforms that can serve multiple sectors of the economy.

Where the Technology Can Be Used

Russian geospatial technologies are likely to see wider adoption in digital services in the near future. Similar tools could be used by taxi and car-sharing services to automatically select the nearest vehicle and calculate arrival times, by delivery and logistics companies to plan routes for couriers and other vehicles, by retailers and e-commerce companies to manage last-mile operations, and by corporate systems to coordinate mobile workforces.

There is also export potential for B2B tools such as mapping APIs, navigation SDKs, routing services and traffic management tools. Russian products in this category could find demand in countries where local delivery, taxi and urban mobility services are expanding.

From Map to Platform

2GIS geospatial technology was first used in a taxi service in October 2021. An integration with operator Citymobil included an SDK and routing tools that improved the accuracy of vehicle locations and made pickup-time calculations faster. Around the same time, the company expanded its API and SDK offerings for businesses, enabling maps, navigation and points-of-interest data to be integrated into mobile apps.

In 2022, the services gained new capabilities for calculating driving routes with additional travel parameters. In 2023, the developer released updates to its Routing API for a range of use cases, including mobile navigation, logistics, delivery and corporate systems. In 2024, its map interfaces began to see wider adoption in enterprise products. 2GIS technology became the foundation of the mapping component in Biznes-navigator MSP (SME Business Navigator), incorporating map APIs, search and geospatial analytics. Geospatial data became part of business decision-making. By 2026, the company had combined routing, task allocation and mobile workforce management tools in GeoPotok: Logistika (GeoFlow: Logistics), a service aimed at courier companies, transportation providers and retailers.

Geospatial Services as Infrastructure

The XCar and 2GIS integration illustrates how Russian IT companies are moving from developing individual services to building technology platforms. Geospatial navigation tools are becoming core infrastructure for industries that depend on moving people and goods. Key areas for further development include logistics automation, intelligent routing, the use of AI to analyze transportation data and the expansion of B2B API services.

For Russia's IT industry, projects like this demonstrate the commercialization of homegrown technologies and the development of potentially competitive export offerings. If Russian geospatial services continue evolving as platform-based products, they could carve out a niche not only in the domestic market but also abroad – particularly in countries where transportation and delivery are rapidly going digital but local mapping platforms have yet to emerge.

2GIS's integrated system allowed us to implement accurate routing and meet user expectations. Passengers get predictable pickup times and accurate vehicle assignment, while drivers get a convenient tool that covers every part of a trip. A technologically advanced driver app has become an important factor in our growth – to date, we have completed more than three million trips
