Nornickel and technology company Reksoft have completed the development and deployment of a system for monitoring converter discharges at a production facility in Norilsk. The system uses computer vision and infrared cameras.

During smelting in a converter, several material phases with different densities are formed. The system is designed to monitor the discharge process, promptly detect when one phase has finished draining and prevent another molten phase from entering the flow. Such errors result in losses of nonferrous metals and complicate further processing.

Using data from infrared cameras, the system detects when the flow transitions from one molten phase to another and alerts the operator to changes in its composition, helping control the converter discharge process. It was initially conceived as a standalone tool but evolved into part of the Tsifrovoy pomoshchnik metallurga (Digital Assistant for Metallurgists) ecosystem, which also includes modules previously implemented by Nornickel and Reksoft.
