School students in the city of Perm will learn engineering skills by assembling unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the regional Ministry of Education.

Starting in grades 7 through 9, technology classes will introduce a specialized module called Robototekhnika (Robotics). Students will design and assemble automated and robotic systems using computer-controlled construction kits.

Students will study the history of unmanned aviation, the technical specifications of modern drones, and their areas of application. They will also assemble drones themselves and learn how to operate them. A separate section of the course focuses on safety regulations.

Courses and a Drone Textbook

The structural design of UAVs is also covered in grade 10 as part of classes on the Fundamentals of Security and Homeland Defense. Students can further learn to operate drones in specialized engineering-focused classrooms.

Earlier this year, Russia released its first school textbook on drones at HSE University. The book, Bespilotnye Letatelnye Apparaty. Ot Ustroystva Do Vybora Professii (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: From Design to Career Choice), will be used in grades 10 and 11.
