Russia’s First Cochlear Implant ELVIS Enters Clinical Trials

A Russian-developed cochlear implant designed to restore hearing has entered the final stage of testing — marking a major step toward the country’s medical technology independence.

The company Neuroimplants ELVIS has officially begun testing Russia’s first domestically produced cochlear implant, a breakthrough device for people with severe hearing loss. Commercial production and sales are expected to begin in 2026.

A cochlear implant is a complex medical device surgically implanted into the inner ear that electrically stimulates the auditory nerve, allowing people with profound hearing impairment to perceive sound. Around 1,500 such implants are installed in Russia every year, and until now, the market has been dominated entirely by foreign manufacturers.

The ELVIS system is based on cutting-edge neuroimplantation technology that establishes a direct connection between the nervous system and an external device. One of the key advantages of the Russian design is that it will include free rehabilitation in private medical centers. Post-surgery rehabilitation — particularly for children — is essential, as patients must learn to recognize sounds after the procedure.

The introduction of a domestically developed cochlear implant reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and mitigates risks associated with sanctions. It also signals Russia’s growing capacity to develop sophisticated, high-tech healthcare solutions on par with global leaders.
