Rosatom Enterprise Develops Technology to Produce Ultra-Pure Germanium
The material is essential for manufacturing semiconductor detectors of gamma and X-ray radiation.

Researchers at JSC Giredmet have developed a new method for producing ultra-pure germanium. The material is used in a range of industries, including medicine and nuclear physics. It is used to manufacture semiconductor detectors for gamma and X-ray radiation. These detectors are used in spectrometry, radiation monitoring, dosimetry and nuclear-material monitoring systems.
The technology combines several methods for zone refining germanium in a controlled atmosphere, using silicon- and nitrogen-based getters as well as specialized carbon-carbon and carbon-silicon coatings.
The team has already produced experimental samples. Preparations are underway to launch pilot production.
