Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the current development of artificial intelligence as the largest technological breakthrough the world has ever seen. He made the remarks at a meeting of the State Council, the country’s top advisory body, focused on workforce training for the Russian economy.

Putin said the next 10–15 years would bring a massive technological transformation that has already “burst into our lives.”

“Artificial intelligence is far more, simply far more breakthrough in nature – comprehensive and, as they say, a cross-cutting technology. It is rapidly spreading across all spheres of life, automating the solution of a huge number of tasks. The pace at which AI systems are being adopted is accelerating every year, drawing almost every person into its orbit, changing lives, the relevance of professions, and the labor market itself,” the president said.

Systemic changes are already under way

Putin urged the country to prepare for systemic changes that are already unfolding alongside technological development. He said new professions would emerge, along with new jobs for specialists who possess engineering thinking, skills in working with big data, and a readiness to take responsibility.

“In this situation, it is important to ensure that people have a clear and understandable professional transition, and to open up new opportunities for education, retraining, and skills development throughout their lives,” Putin said.

A shift in the paradigm of workforce training is becoming one of the state’s most important tasks, requiring accessible and flexible infrastructure, he added.

“New technologies demand a revision of existing programs and the development of new curricula and teaching methods, as well as large-scale retraining of educators at all levels,” the president said.

These principles will be embedded in Russia’s new education development strategy through 2036.
