Robot Tractors Roll Out on Russian Farmlands

Autonomous machines powered by artificial intelligence are set to plow fields in Russia’s Far East without human drivers.

A major agricultural project is launching in Russia’s Amur region: fleets of AI-powered autonomous tractors will begin operating without human intervention. The initiative was formally announced at the Eastern Economic Forum, according to the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation.

Experts are calling the project a modern echo of the Soviet-era motor-tractor stations that once revolutionized farming. This time, however, it’s a leap into automation and artificial intelligence. The rollout not only promises greater efficiency in Russia’s agricultural sector but also underscores the country’s ability to build homegrown AI solutions for national priorities.

With investments of $12 million, the region will establish Russia’s first robot-tractor station. The facility will offer farmers access to a fleet of 70–80 domestically built autonomous tractors, providing nonstop operation, high precision, and a fix to the chronic shortage of agricultural workers.

Local authorities say universities and colleges in the Far East are already preparing talent for this transformation, launching specialized training programs to equip future specialists with the skills needed to manage and maintain next-generation farm machinery.
