Russia Eyes Global Leadership in Permanent Magnet Production

Scientists have pioneered a 3D-printing method for rare-earth magnets that could transform industries from electric vehicles to aerospace.

Researchers in Russia have unveiled a breakthrough technology for producing permanent magnets using 3D printing. These magnets are critical components in electric cars, buses, aircraft, and even space systems.

The method enables the creation of complex magnetic systems from rare-earth metals without requiring assembly. So far, the team has produced magnets measuring 10×10×3 millimeters, but the dimensions can be scaled to meet industrial needs. Built from neodymium, iron, and other rare-earth elements, the magnets can withstand extreme temperatures—up to 200 °C for neodymium-based designs and 550 °C for samarium-cobalt variants.

According to Alexey Volegov, head of the Department of Magnetism and Magnetic Nanomaterials at Ural Federal University, the innovation could position Russia among the global leaders in permanent magnet manufacturing within the next five to seven years.
