Russian private space firm Sputnix is working on a new family of orbital platforms that will support Direct-to-Cell technology, enabling smartphones to connect directly to satellites without additional hardware.

Development of D2C communication satellites is part of the company’s broader effort to expand its own satellite constellations. In addition to direct-to-smartphone systems, Sputnix also plans to build ultra-high-resolution imaging satellites and radar satellites.

The project is being developed with full backing from Russian authorities. In late March, the Ministry of Digital Development allocated the necessary radio frequencies to Sputnix and Bureau 1440.

The move is aimed at advancing domestic communication systems in a smartphone-to-satellite format. The frequencies are designated for the satellite segment of a hybrid communications system.
