Russian Company Wins Grant to Build Digital Design Platform

A Nizhny Novgorod–based firm is developing an AI-driven system for designing cutting tools.

Nizhny Novgorod company Alcrona has been named one of the winners of a competition held by the Russian Science Foundation, securing a grant of 30 million rubles (about $360,000) to develop an advanced digital platform. The company will also invest an additional 3 million rubles (around $36,000) of its own funds into the project.

The development is a software system designed to create combined cutting tools using artificial intelligence and 3D printing. The platform is expected to automate the design process, significantly speeding it up and enabling the creation of tools with highly complex geometries that cannot be produced using traditional methods.

Not Just Software, but an Intelligent Design Environment

According to Alcrona, the solution is built on the synergy of machine learning and advanced manufacturing technologies. Rather than functioning as conventional software, the platform is positioned as an intelligent environment that helps engineers identify optimal and innovative tool designs.

The project’s distinctive feature is its end-to-end approach, covering the entire cycle from a digital model to a finished product produced on a 3D printer. This shortens the path from concept to implementation and allows tools to be quickly adapted to the specific requirements of customers.

The development of such platforms is part of a broader digital transformation of Russia’s industrial sector. As the Russian Science Foundation noted, the supported project is focused on a concrete outcome: creating a new technological solution that is expected to boost the competitiveness of Russian manufacturing.
