Russia Deploys Grid Stability Monitoring System to Boost Power Capacity

A new digital monitoring system is helping Russia increase electrical grid capacity without compromising reliability, unlocking additional power for consumers.

Russia has addressed the problem of low electrical voltage by implementing a digital grid stability monitoring system, now being rolled out across multiple regions. One recent example is in Sverdlovsk Oblast, where the system allows dispatchers to increase the transmission capacity of the grid by up to 30 MW in each controlled section, without reducing the reliability of power supply to consumers.

The technology offers further advantages. By expanding transmission capacity, operators can optimize grid operation during maintenance work on both transmission and generation equipment. In Sverdlovsk Oblast, the system has enabled additional output from two hydroelectric plants—Verkhnetagilskaya and Sredneuralskaya.

Developed domestically, the monitoring system operates in real time, calculating and displaying permissible power flows to dispatchers based on the actual state of the entire energy system. This capability allows operators to adjust transmission capacity and select the optimal operating mode.
