Russian Companies Test Promising Satellite Communication Technology

Successful tests on CubeSats open new opportunities for managing orbital constellations and advancing telecommunications.

Russian companies Geoscan and Gonets Satellite System have successfully completed orbital tests of high-speed data transmission in the S-band on small satellites. The achievement marks a significant step forward for Russia’s space communication technologies. These advanced solutions strengthen the country’s position in the global space services market and open new opportunities for international cooperation in communications and space exploration.

The tests were conducted using the Geoscan-4 and Geoscan-5 CubeSats, which were launched earlier this summer. During a series of communication sessions, engineers confirmed the stable operation of the special transceivers of the Gonets system and achieved data transmission speeds of up to 1 Mbps.

The S-band frequency range (2–4 GHz) is considered one of the most efficient for remote control of spacecraft and building mobile satellite communication networks. This development ensures a reliable communication channel with small satellites, which are playing an increasingly important role in space research and Earth monitoring.

According to company representatives, the successful tests demonstrate that the equipment can be compactly integrated into small satellite platforms. This provides a foundation for scaling the technology and deploying it in future satellite systems. The collected statistical data will help engineers more accurately design promising orbital constellations.

Another key goal of the experiment was to receive signals from satellites using Roscosmos’ ground infrastructure, confirming the practical value of this technology for Russia’s national space program.
