Russian students have developed an AI system for monitoring cattle that can identify sick animals before clear symptoms emerge, allowing treatment to begin sooner.

Cows are continuously monitored by cameras, with AI analyzing the resulting video feed. The system maintains a digital record for each cow, and the algorithm automatically logs information about changes in the animal’s health.

The system acts as an assistant to veterinarians, drawing their attention to potential health problems. In an emergency, it can send an alert to a veterinarian.

The algorithm can already detect lameness with more than 95% accuracy and is being further developed to identify mastitis and bursitis at an early stage.

“We are working to create the conditions for promising projects to find applications in the real economy,” said Olga Serebryannikova, director of the Project Office for Youth Entrepreneurship Development at Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
