Russian scientists are using AI as a virtual research advisor

At the Congress of Young Scientists in Sochi, participants explored how artificial intelligence is transforming academic research across Russia. Representatives from Moscow State University (MSU) shared their experience integrating AI into communication, workflow automation, and early-stage research guidance.

According to MSU experts, AI tools are rapidly reducing the burden of routine documentation and allowing researchers to focus more deeply on creative inquiry and experimental work.

Building a Digital Research Ecosystem

Denis Yanishev, Director of the Center for Electronic Educational Resources at MSU, outlined the university’s digital transformation priorities. 

He emphasized that the number of such tools is growing exponentially, and the challenge now is to identify the most effective and widely accessible solutions.

A compelling real‑world example was presented by Maksim Vyalkov, a PhD student at MSU’s Sarov branch. He uses AI to automate administrative tasks, significantly reducing time spent on paperwork and course planning.

AI as a Virtual Scientific Advisor

Vyalkov explained that AI tools fall into two categories: those that support scientific creativity and those that streamline bureaucratic processes. Neural networks help him structure lesson plans, prepare reports, and manage teaching responsibilities — freeing up time for laboratory research.

In experimental work, AI operates as a “virtual research advisor.” A scientist can ask the system clarifying questions during the research process and later verify the AI‑generated insights with a human supervisor.

Researchers note that the growing digital ecosystem — including electronic libraries, content‑processing platforms, and AI‑assisted tools — accelerates scientific progress and strengthens national technological sovereignty.
