Russian Scientists Develop Weather-Independent Communication Technology Based on Lasers
In the future, the technology could enable internet connectivity that does not depend on weather conditions.

Russian scientists have developed and tested a weather-resilient laser communication technology operating in the mid-infrared range, according to the scientific director of the National Center for Physics and Mathematics and Russian Academy of Sciences academician Alexander Sergeev.
From Weather-Resilient Links to the Internet
The new type of communication is expected to move the country closer to all-weather internet connectivity in locations where laying fiber-optic cables is not feasible. The development has no direct analogs in Russia.
Sergeev added that the technology could help expand the country’s global leadership in laser technologies by shifting practical applications into more promising atmospheric transparency windows.
