Russian Scientists Build Smart Crop Monitoring System

Researchers in Russia have developed a high-precision AI-driven system to assess crop health and boost agricultural efficiency.

A team from the Perm Federal Research Center has introduced a new AI-powered platform that leverages geographic information systems (GIS) and satellite imagery to monitor the condition of crops. The innovation is already being field-tested, according to Grain and Legume News.

The system analyzes multispectral data from satellites and drones to evaluate plant health, fertilizer effectiveness, weed contamination, and harvest readiness. Its key advantage is the ability to pinpoint problem areas across large farms quickly—a game-changer for industrial-scale agriculture.

"Our method helps farmers strike the right balance between crop volume and quality, directly impacting the profitability of agriculture," said Dmitry Fomin, a junior researcher on the team.

In the future, the system could become a national standard in Russia’s agrotech sector, helping farms adapt to climate change while improving yields. The researchers are also exploring AI tools for early detection of forest diseases and pest infestations.
