Russian Arctic Icebreaker Simulator Named Finalist in National Innovation Award

Engineers in St. Petersburg have developed a digital training complex for Arctic icebreaker captains that has been recognized as one of the country’s top 10 innovations.

The simulator for nuclear icebreakers of the Arktika class (Project 22220) has been shortlisted for the inaugural national 'Maritime Olympus' award, which highlights breakthrough technologies shaping the future of the Northern Sea Route. The project was presented by Evolution of Marine Digital Technologies, a St. Petersburg–based company.

The training system is designed to prepare crews for the extreme conditions of the Arctic. It allows captains to practice ship handling, select optimal routes, and manage resources effectively. The platform is highly adaptable and can be customized for specific tasks. In the future, it is planned to be integrated with the Unified Digital Services Platform of the Northern Sea Route.

This development carries strategic importance for Russia. By training top-level specialists for Arctic operations, the simulator improves navigation safety and efficiency while reducing risks and costs.
