RUSAL plans to deploy machine vision–enabled video cameras at all five of its aluminum smelters this year to automate monitoring of the electrolysis process.

The company says the project is the most capital-intensive artificial intelligence initiative it has developed and is rolling out in production. Investment is estimated at about 1.6 billion rubles ($~17 million). The system is expected to cover around 6,500 electrolyzers.

Machine vision monitoring can cut the duration of electrolyzer depressurization events by half compared with manual inspections conducted during routine plant walkthroughs.

The smart video monitoring system has already been fully installed at the Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Smelter (KrAZ). Similar deployments are planned at the Bratsk Aluminum Smelter (BrAZ), Volgograd Aluminum Smelter (VgAZ), Irkutsk Aluminum Smelter (IrkAZ), and Novokuznetsk Aluminum Smelter (NkAZ).

Earlier, RUSAL reported deploying its own neural network–based technology to monitor aluminum hydroxide particle fractions.
